Stalwart of the Week: Ennocent Francis Amwayi
Class of 2017 (Stream 4R) | Electrical Engineering & Robotics | Shanghai, China
“Consistency beats a lot of things including talent.”
Introduction
This week, we spotlight Ennocent Francis Amwayi, a proud Stalwart from the Class of 2017 (Stream 4R), currently pursuing Electrical Engineering and Robotics in Shanghai, China.
His journey reflects resilience, adaptability, and the courage to step beyond borders in pursuit of growth. From the rectangular classrooms of Kakamega School (GASK) to the evolving spherical world of robotics and automation, Ennocent’s story is one of experience, exploration, and steady ambition.
The Stalwart Journey
Early Days
Ennocent’s memory lane traces strongly back to the R Stream, filled with vivid experiences and unforgettable characters. He remembers admission days under Mr. Namusasi and Madam Camelyne, guided by the overall prefect Brayo. In 4R, he recalls Mr. Kevin Asuba, his class teacher alongside Jondi, Mwinamo, Nyarotso, and Opati.
One standout memory was welcoming the Scania bus with the famous NTV graffiti, and being among the first group to ride it on a trip to Jinja, Uganda with likes of Oduor, Esabwa, Oliver, Ekiru, and others. Highrise Phase Two, especially the first cubicle, built lasting friendships with names like Kiptanui, Wakhungu, Chesir, Otuoma, Kenga, and Odero.
There were lighter moments too:-
Evening preachings from his brother Hezron, friendly competition with Trickerd, Otuoma James (a chemistry champion who once paid up a bet with "hot" and mandazi). Not forgetting “premium meals” from a kitchen connection courtesy of Noah’s friend.
He remembers classroom chaos too, like a Swahili teacher who “was messing us until we met Wachakana for rescue,” and Arnold the mail guy who circulated a book filled with love messages for “Bunyore queens.”
One unforgettable moment came when Madam Colleta and Ekina marked his CRE paper at 100%, awarding him KES 300, though peace during tea break was short-lived thanks to “pinch guys.”
Not all moments were smooth. One incident in 4R when he belched and saw him punished by Mr. Ochayo after a misunderstanding during a Maths lesson. Still, these experiences shaped the resilience and perspective he carries today.
After High School Graduation
After high school, Ennocent was admitted to pursue Electrical Engineering at Kenyatta University. However, an opportunity arose, a scholarship that took him to China to study the same field.
He completed his undergraduate studies in 2024 and shortly after enrolled again. He is currently still studying in China, continuing to build his expertise.
Challenges Faced
One of the biggest challenges he encountered was adapting to cultural differences in a new country. Over time, he adjusted and grew through the experience.
He also had a brief working experience in Kenya between 2021 to 2022, where he observed firsthand the tough working conditions engineers face, including low pay, an insight that reshaped his perspective on career paths.
Defining Moment
After years of studying across two countries, a key realization stood out:
It is better to try building something of your own if in a position to do so.
Through interactions with professionals, Ennocent observed that many successful individuals started small and built steadily over time through dedication and persistence. This shifted his mindset from just seeking opportunities to creating them.
Current Impact
Currently specializing in Robotics (Path Planning), Ennocent has contributed to the field with a few publications. Witnessing the global shift toward automation inspired him to pursue this path, positioning himself within one of the fastest-growing technological spaces.
Beyond academics, he is also entrepreneurial:
- Runs small online businesses in shipping and logistics, connecting Kenyan wholesalers with Chinese manufacturers
- Promotes Kenyan products in China, including coffee, tea, and handmade Maasai items.
He is actively building bridges between markets, turning knowledge into practical impact.
Advice to Fellow Stalwarts
“Fellow stalwarts, I have come to confirm that consistency beats a lot of things including talent. If you stay focussed and keep on showing up on your grind, many doors open including those we never imagined. I have also learnt that cashflow is key. Burry the ego of having gone to big schools and hustle like any other folks out there. Be teachable and not limited to do only that which you studied.”
Closing Reflection
High school gave us memories we carry for life, friendships time cannot erase, and lessons we didn’t know we needed. No matter where life takes us, a part of us remains in those halls and with each other. Here’s ?to the laughs, the struggles, the growth, and the unforgettable moments. May we all meet again as the people we dreamed of becoming.
